New Crayons & Awards

New Crayons is a meme crated by susan at Color Online. In this meme I share what new books I got this week. I only received one book this week, but that's good because I have so much to read!

This week, I was honored to have a fantastic blogger visit.

A blogger spotlight with Maggie from Bibiliophilia-Maggie's Bookshelf

Maggie's amazing guest post on white guilt and white privilege

From the Publisher (Henry Holt & Co.)

Toads & Diamonds by Heather Tomlinson

Diribani has come to the village well to get water for her family's scant meal of curry and rice. She never expected to meet a goddess there. Yet she is granted a remarkable gift: Flowers and precious jewels drop from her lips whenever she speaks.

It seems only right to Tana that the goddess judged her kind, lovely stepsister worthy of such riches. And when she encounters the goddess, she is not surprised to find herself speaking snakes and toads as a reward.

Blessings and curses are never so clear as they might seem, however. Diribani’s newfound wealth brings her a prince—and an attempt on her life. Tana is chased out of the village because the province's governor fears snakes, yet thousands are dying of a plague spread by rats. As the sisters' fates hang in the balance, each struggles to understand her gift. Will it bring her wisdom, good fortune, love . . . or death?

-I WoWd this a little while ago so I'm really happy to get it. Have I mentioned how much I love the cover? It's so pretty! I love the henna on the hands and the gorgeous flower.

Awards

This is so belated. I apologize if I don't mention your award. You can remind me and I can update this post. I went as far back as I remembered. I really have to stop letting awards pile up. I apologize to everyone whose given me an award!

A Prolific Blogger is someone who is constantly reading and blogging and being engaged in the community. They write some very thoughtful and interesting posts and they are leaving comments and visiting new blogs as often as they can.

I received this award from Katy at A Few More Pages. Thanks so much Katy, it means a lot!

1. Every winner of the Prolific Blogger Award has to pass on this award to at least seven other deserving prolific bloggers. Spread some love!

2. Each Prolific Blogger must link to the blog from which he/she has received the award.

3. Every Prolific Blogger must link back to This Post, which explains the origins and motivation for the award. You must also add your name to the Mr. Linky so that we can all get to know the other winners.

2. Nathalie at Multiculturalism Rocks!
3. April at Good Books & Good Wine

Seven Things about Me-My Most random list yet!

1. I'm really forgetful (hence belated award posts!)

2. I think Michelle Bachmann is an idiot.

3. I love writing with Sharpies

4. I can't pronounce words to save my life; hypocrite, ignorant, chemise. I know what they mean, but I don't say them right.

5. I'm a procrastinator (I should be typing an extra credit essay right now)

6. I hate how politics doesn't seem to be about helping people anymore. It's all partisan and ridiculous. They all need to straighten up and work together. Please and thank you

7. I love spring when I'm not in school.

Maggie also gave me the Happy 101 award. Thank you! I've gotten it already and I just don't feel like passing it on. Anyone who wants, take it :)

I'm still searching for other awards I've gotten that I forgot to post, so this post will be edited. The good thing about searching older posts is I'm reading and replying to comments I may have missed.

Or maybe not. Coming up with blogs and trying not to pass on awards to bloggers who've already received them is hard work. And I'm lazy. Ah well

  1. Ari!!! You sure know how to brighten Sundays, don't you? As if New Crayons wasn't enough of a treat, you spice your post up with awards, and my favorite, random facts! :D

Thank you for the award. I'm honored and excited. Like you, I need to be timely with them. :)

Would love to hear you say "chemise". :D
And so with you on Nr 6, regarding politics. Politicians are supposedly elected to serve the best interest of their citizens, of their country, NOT of private corporations. Don't get me started. Mass manipulation through the media makes me mad as well, i.e. officials lying (on tv, mind you) to push a private agenda...

Oh well. Let's remain optimistic. :)

  2. I love your seven things, Ari - they made me smile! (And can I second you on that Michelle Bachman comment? Why oh why does she get re-elected????)

  3. @Nathalie-Glad to hear it :) LOL no you don't want to hear me say it. Let's just say I would start off with "chem" as in chemistry. lol. Right remain optimistic. So not easy

@Colleen-She makes me physically ill. I try and keep politics off the blog but she makes me want to write a post about how ignorant she is. Arrghhhhhhhhhh. It's a mystery as to how she gets re-elected. So happy to hear the facts made you happy, I was happy while writing them (except for the ones about poltics/bachman)

  4. I liked your 7 things, especially number 4 & 7. There are words that I don't say because I'm afraid I'll mispronounce them. I used to get teased for using incorrect pronunciation when I was a kid. It wasn't always my fault-my parents are from another country and they used British pronunciations for a lot of things. Now if there is a word I'm not sure about, I don't use it because I don't want people to look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about. It's funny because when we read a lot, we learn a lot of new vocabulary but there is usually not a pronunciation guide.

Toads and Diamonds is on my TBR list. It looks fantastic. Have you read Tiger Moon by Antonia Michaelis? You might like that one too.

Have a great week and congratulations on your blog awards!

  5. Thanks so much Ari! You are very kind, and I'm honored to accept!

Canadian politics = boring. But thankfully, no Bachmans around...

I am going to try and find Toads in the library; I'll watch for your review!

  6. @Christina-I don't mind mispronouncing words around my friends because half the time they don't know what I'm talking about! So true, I only have a good vocabulary (which I so rarely use) from books. They should have pronounciation guides :) I haven't read Tiger Moon but it's added to my list! Thanks for the rec :)

@niranjana-You are so welcome. I love your reviews =) I was wondering about Canadian politics because in the U.S. we hear snippets about European politics (Britain, France,Russia, Germany, Ireland) and Asian politics but never anything about Candian or Australian politics. It might be better for it to be boring; you guys have healthcare in peace (we have healthcare, no peace). Toads & Diamonds looks good so here's hoping!

  7. Ari! Thanks so much for the award! It did double duty, as it reminded me of a few awards I have yet to post about that I received a few weeks ago, lol. I'm off to read Maggie's guest post! :-)

  8. Ha! Excellent. :D This was funny. Anyway, thank you for the award and I'll be sure to pass it on! All your awards are richly deserved! =)

  9. Thanks so much for the award Ari. I think blogging lets us all be big procrastinators, but perhaps out of procrastination comes pretty, creative things.

By the way I'm reading Toads and Diamonds right now(so pretty, I smile a little every time I get it out of my bag). It's really got a great concept behind it and I like both the sisters equally at the moment. Hope you enjoy it.

  10. LAWL, I don't feel like I deserve of Profilic Blogger award since I've been taking a hiatus on book reviews and what not. (Exams are EVIL, EVIL I SAY.) But thanks for the award anyhow! 8D

  11. Thank you so much! I sympathize with the word pronunciations - it's hard if you only see them written and never hear them said! "Respite" is one that I pronounced wrong all the way into college, I think. RES-pit. Not re-SPITE. Grrr, English!

  12. I am so honoured that you gave me an AWARD!! O.o

    *hugs you very hard*

Thank you very much, Ari. :)

Let us unite in our super-procrastination-skillz! Heh.

Also, Toads and Diamonds looks awesome.

ALSO!! OMG, I just finished Bleeding Violet and I am hyperventilating at how amazing it was.

  13. P.S. I am putting TOADS AND DIAMONDS on hold at the library right now! It looks great, and it has such a beautiful cover! :)

  16. @anica-Just for you :) And my other reades who are patiently reiterating that they want more fantasy!

@Akilah-You are so very welcome. Just do as many blogs as you can =)

@Maggie-Aww thank you. <3. Check out this interview with Heather Tomlinson on Toads & Diamonds http://community.livejournal.com/enchantedinkpot/53869.html

@Karen-I'm never sure if authors post blog awards but I figured I might as well go for it. Procrastinators unite! Unite tomorrow that is. BV made my life. One of my top fav books of 2010 for sure.

@Jenny-Respite is another word I have difficult with! Ahh words *shakes head* You're welcome!

@Ah Yuan-But you are still tweeting and commenting and being awesome. As always. And you're taking exams so hopefully this award cheered you up. But now you're baaack! yay :D

@Jodie-So glad to hear that you're enjoying Toads & Diamonds. I smile at the cover too, it's waiting to be opened! You're so deserving of the award. I hope out of my procrastination comes good and helpful things (well my open letter happened right before finals when I was supposed to be studying and that turned out well).

@Kris-Yes please read and comment! I always need to be reminded so I completely understand
