Waiting on Wednesday: Huntress

WoW is hosted by Breaking the Spine

This week I'm waiting on....

Huntress by Malinda Lo

Release Date: April 5, 2011

Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn't shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people's survival hangs in the balance. To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two seventeen-year-old girls, are picked to go on a dangerous and unheard-of journey to Tanlili, the city of the Fairy Queen. Taisin is a sage, thrumming with magic, and Kaede is of the earth, without a speck of the otherworldly. And yet the two girls' destinies are drawn together during the mission. As members of their party succumb to unearthly attacks and fairy tricks, the two come to rely on each other and even begin to fall in love. But the Kingdom needs only one huntress to save it, and what it takes could tear Kaede and Taisin apart forever. The exciting adventure prequel to Malinda Lo's highly acclaimed novel Ash is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance.

-The cover is phenomenal. It reminds me of this one scene from Mulan, when she first uses a sword and the sword image slices her as half girl, half man. Anyway, I love the strength in this image and how it reflects both girls. I'm looking forward to returning to the world detailed in Ash and I like that in this book it is even more obvious that the two main characters are of Chinese descent. And I just LOVE Malinda Lo's lush writing. I wish this book was coming out in the winter because it seems like the ideal book to curl up with.

What are you waiting on this week? Dime!

PS The new winner of Awake by Wendy Raven McNair is Maggie! Congrats :D Email me or I'll email you asap.

  1. Wait. Maggie as in me? Wha...? Yay! If so, you're going to have to email me because for some reason my emails hit your spam filter and getting sent back to me, unless it's a reply to something you already wrote. If not, kindly disregard my happy dance. And congratulations to this other Maggie person! =D

I'm really excited for this one, too. ASH was one of my favorite books I read last year, period. And the cover is pretty! =)

  2. Love this pick. It's definitely in my top 5 most wanted list for 2011. I hope it's published in the UK!

  3. I'm really excited to hear she has another book coming! I haven't read Ash yet, but I have a feeling I'm really going to like it, so it's great to hear there's another one on the way.

I agree though, it does seem like more of a winter release than a summer, but oh well, it means we get it sooner!

  4. I loved Huntress (I was lucky enough to get an ARC at YALSA and it is a good book to cuddle up with. I was also lucky enough to hear the author speak about her works and she told the story of how that cover came to be - there was a little bit of a battle between the author and the art department over some details.) I actually liked this book better than ASH, and you guys are all in for a treat when you finally get your hands on the book. The ending is not what I expected or hoped for, but I realized it is exactly the right and inevitable end for this story, so I left satisfied. And by summer I'll probably be reading this again.

  5. I'm still waiting to read Ash by Malinda Lo. And there's another book already. I'm really falling behind. However I just came across a book called Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri. Ever heard of her or read work by her? Seems like it'll be interesting (even if it's not my usual urban fantasy fare *g*)

  6. Looking forward to this one a lot (agree that cover is great and strong - rargh swords). Also love that there is a character called Kaede - that's the name of the heroine in 'Tales of the Otori' and I want to see it used more, it's so pretty, but with an edge in the sibilance.
