Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Sephy is a Cross - a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a nought - a -colourless- member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that-s as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Cross schools- Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum - a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger.

-Reverse racial prejudice. Sounds really interesting and my sister already read it and loved it!

Question For Authors & Editors

This is something that I've been wondering about. After I write a review and I want to share it with the author but I've been asked to review it for a publishing house, does it reach both parties? Does the editor pass a review onto the author? Or if you email an author do they pass it onto their editor? In short, should a review be emailed to author and editor or only one? Which do authors and editors prefer? Fellow bloggers what do you do?

  1. I confess I've not been consistent about it, but I usually send a link to the publisher and I guess they pass it on to the author.

  2. I actually have no idea in all honesty. I rarely send it to both parties at the same time. If it's for review, I send it to the publishing house. However if I really like the book, I will request an author interview and then link the review too.

  3. It would depend on who sent the review copy to you. If it's the author, you'd e-mail the link to the author; if it's the publisher, you'd e-mail it to whoever (editor or publicity person) contacted you. If it's an outside publicist who the author or publisher hired, that's who'd get the review. If you bought the book or borrowed it from the library, you have no obligation to send it to anyone, but if you want to send it to someone anyway, the author would be your best choice. Authors tend to care more about their books than publishers and outside publicists.

In fact, you're not reviewing the book FOR the publishing house, unless an editor has sent you a manuscript for review that they're still considering (some smaller presses use teen readers) or if they're looking for an endorsement, what's usually referred to as a "blurb."

  6. I always email the links to my reviews to whomever sent me the book. Usually publishers/publicists pass on the reviews to the author, but it never hurts to send the URL directly to the author as well. Most of the time, I get very nice, appreciate emails back from authors I've emailed. HTH!

  7. I just checked out Naughts and Crosses from the library on Tuesday.

If you want to share your review with the author chances are you loved the book. So if they have an email address I say send them a quick hello and the link. And keep the gushing down to respectable level.

Normally, I don't send email links to pubs after reviewing an arc. I didn't think it was a requirement.
