It's probably because I used to read ALOT of fantasy and Graceling seemed like a rehash of Tamora Pierce's Lioness Quartet. I think you might like Pierce's better. I await your review on Graceling(I need to get a goodreads account or something).

I just finished reading Silver Phoenix and I liked it a lot. I will probably start Franny and Zoey this weekend after finals.

I love college stays. I did that at my current university when I was in high school. Are you thinking about going to Brown?Najelahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03529650047480022627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-87699579249425349922010-07-19T22:37:30.913-05:002010-07-19T22:37:30.913-05:00@Sandy-Same here! Percival Everett (I think that's his name, the author of Not Sidney Poitier along with a few others) is an author that I haven't read but I've heard good things about him. You may want to check him out. I'm going to read Catch 22 first, mostly because it's a 'classic' and since it's supposed to be funny, I don't dread reading it :)

@Vidisha-Emailed you, thanks!

@Najela-Ooo how is Franny and Zooey? I adore The Catcher in the Rye and one of my longtime reading goals is to read all of Salinger's work. Hmm your review was the first 'so so' review I'd seen of Graceling. It was quite interesting.

Thank you for the links! I'll check them out :) I went to Brown for a week to take a summer class and just to get a small feel for life on a college campus. So much fun.

@Mardel-I've vaguel heard of Sister Chicas from my library, but it's never in! (I guess it's popular? or just lost? haha). Thanks for entering the giveaway :)

So after Catch 22, I'll have to read Terry Pratchett's works along with David Sedaris.

Never experienced the Latina mom, but reading about it makes me laugh and I can usually relate in some way.

@Niranjana-Done, emailed you =)

@Topher-I haven't read Kindred yet. If I linked to a review, it means I've read it. Sorry if that was unclear. In my next update, I'll cross off the ones I've read and include the review.

From what I've heard, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to middle grade students but I bet high schoolers could handle it.MissAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11042352415616854651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-19147614261662616652010-07-19T17:13:10.934-05:002010-07-19T17:13:10.934-05:00Hey - what'd you think of Kindred? It felt like it was a bit slow but it also felt like it needed to move slowly, and I ended up thinking it was great. Would you recommend it to young people?CGLnychttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08182797883212581609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-76698167291122475612010-07-19T10:01:37.696-05:002010-07-19T10:01:37.696-05:00Woo-hoo, I won! He also uses different species (trolls, vampires, dwarfs, etc) to satire not only race relations but the things people do to try to fix things. You could read any of his books and switch out the species with a group from earth and you get a very good story about relationships between people, between races, between men and women. Great writer. All humorous too.

I entered you contest, and I had just pulled out a book I've been trying to remember to read, so I put it in the recommendations - Sister Chicas. It's YA ( bought it for the YA challenge) and it seems like it might be a fun read (dealing with latina moms and family - I've had the Latina Mom thing myself!)Mardelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00063358136590143066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-88200985309598681442010-07-19T01:15:45.166-05:002010-07-19T01:15:45.166-05:00Here's some of the links to the buying power t...Here's some of the links to the buying power thing.I think the 'fact" in mine was a little exaggerated, but my post was more of a rant than a letter (which I will get to after this week. Was it a college tour or something?

I was a little disappointed by Graceling, but despite writing fantasy, I'm not a big fan of reading it. I just picked up Leviathan from the library and will probably read that after finishing Franny and Zoey by J.D. Salinger which I will read after reading Silver Phoenix(I'm loving it by the way)

As for the humor list, I'd add David Sedaris "Naked." I can't think of the last book I read where I busted up from laughter. There have been some funny things in my workshop class that I hope get published one day. Those writers are immensely talented.Najelahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03529650047480022627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-85557398116644706142010-07-18T20:36:25.124-05:002010-07-18T20:36:25.124-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Vidishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09534693699879901344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-34675044932385644732010-07-18T20:33:12.784-05:002010-07-18T20:33:12.784-05:00wow i won i m surprised..lol i just emailed you wi...wow i won i m surprised..lol i just emailed you with my mailing address let me know if you got the email or not ..thanksVidishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09534693699879901344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255886452367019317.post-59273916042177518622010-07-18T20:01:23.762-05:002010-07-18T20:01:23.762-05:00I thought I would suggest a funny novel but I coul...I thought I would suggest a funny novel but I couldn't think of any other than Catch-22. I've just realised I don't read much humour which is odd because it's my favourite kind of movie. So as I have only read about three on the "50 novels to read when you need a laugh" list I'll start there.
